When you are dealing with irrigation systems in Bothell, leak detection can be a difficult task as most irrigation system leaks happen below ground. Signs that indicate an irrigation system leak below ground include patches of soggy ground that refuse to dry, or an unusually high and unexplainable water bill.
Leak detection
How to find an irrigation leak:
- Above ground. Irrigation leaks above ground generally only occur in micro or drip irrigation systems. To check for leaks, uncover the supply pipe by removing and dirt, mulch or plant life and turn on the water to check for spraying or bubbles.
- Below ground. In most cases an underground leak will require the help of a professional to repair, but to locate the leak you can begin by capping all the sprinkler heads, turning on the water and waiting for puddles to appear on the surface. Once the leak has been found, do not dig for it as you may end up doing more damage.
Leak repair can be a tricky business if you are not 100% sure of what you’re doing, especially if you are dealing with something as complex as an irrigation system. There are however some simple DIY steps you can follow to repair a minor leak, but for major leaks you are much better off acquiring the services of a professional.
Minor leak repair tips
- Turn off the water and cut the pipe neatly in two at the location of the leak.
- Separate the pipe and place a coupling nut onto each end and follow with a gasket.
- Place a coupling body over one end and insert the other end into the body and tighten the nuts at both ends.
- Flush the system thoroughly to ensure the leak is properly repaired.

A water heater usually doesn’t give advance warning that it’s going to break down and require a water heater repair in Northgate. There are some factors that can help you determine if the problem is with your water heater or a problem with something else. Follow these steps before you ask a contractor to come to your home:
- Clogged Shower Head. If you turn on your shower and water doesn’t come out, it is possible that the shower head is clogged and requires cleaning. However, if cold water comes out when you turn on the hot water, your water heater may be faulty and you will require the services of a water heater repair company.
- Faulty Faucets. The same theory applies to the faucets in your home. If only one faucet doesn’t have water or hot water, it is most likely a clogged faucet head. If there was something wrong with the hot water tank, you would not have hot water in any of the taps including the shower head. Before calling for water heater repair, check all taps to determine whether it is a problem with just one faucet or all of the faucets.
- Wet Basement Floor. The hot water tank is usually located in close proximity to the furnace so it is common to assume that the water tank is leaking if you discover water on the floor where the water heater and furnace are located. However, it is possible that the water is not leaking from your water tank but the drain hose from your furnace is clogged causing it to leak water on the floor. Locate and inspect your furnace drain hose to see if the hose is free and clear before calling the water heater repair installation company.
- Power Check. If the water heater is not coming on and the water coming from the taps is cold, check the power source to ensure the appliance is plugged in. If you discover that the water heater is unplugged, plug it back in and wait to see if it comes on. Let the water heater do its job and check in about an hour to see if there is any hot water coming from the faucets. If there is no hot water, you will require servicing to your water heater.
Once you have determined that you require the services of a water heater installation in Northgate, call Gene Johnson Plumbing to book a service call with one of their highly trained service professionals.

There is no worse feeling than wanting to have a hot shower and being disappointed when there is no hot water gushing out of the shower head. Water heater repair in Kirkland should always be complete by a professional. If you are curious about some basic steps that Plumbers take to maintain your pipes and repair your water heater you may find the following information interesting.
Water heater maintenance
Most water heaters use copper piping because it is durable and reliable but it does sometimes fail and leaks can develop. A trained plumber will commonly use a soldering iron, some solder flux paste, a tube cutter, sandpaper, metal file and a repair coupling.
- Prep the area – Dry the area that needs work and turn off the power or gas. This is imperative in any water heater repair installation and is a basic safety precaution. Leaving the tank on can also lead to the elements burning out.
- Shut off the water supply – This should be done either at the main shut off valve or on the incoming water supply line.
- Drain the tank – The water heater tank and the pipes need to be empty before any repairs can be done. Drain the pipes by running the hot water taps in the house and empty the remainder from the tank by using a garden hose connected to the fitting at the bottom of the heater tank.
- Remove the leaky section – Using the tube cutter or a hacksaw, remove the piece of piping that is leaking. A tube cutter is simpler and easier to use and it produces a neater finish. Sand down any rough spots on the remaining pipe with the sandpaper and the metal file.
- Prepare the pipe for soldering – Rough the outside edge of the pipe so that the solder has something to grip onto. Use the sandpaper to do this portion of the water heater repair. Coat the ends of the pipes with flux paste.
- Insert the repair coupling – Use sandpaper and a thin layer of flux paste on the inside of the repair coupling. Slide the coupling into the two separate ends of copper pipe and turn it around to make sure that the flux paste is spread evenly on the inside of the pipes.
- Solder – Solder the copper coupling using a sharp blue flame that has a small amount of yellow in it. Move the soldering iron around the coupling until the flame turns green. Take the soldering wire and apply it to the ends of the coupling where it meets the pipes. Solder until the joins are completely sealed.
- Finish off the repair – Allow the pipes to cool and make sure that all taps in the house are turned off. Turn on the main or incoming water supply and examine the repair to make sure that there are no more leaks.

If you find yourself in need of the services of a firm specializing in plumbing in Lynnwood, you have the pick of the crop as there are many firms vying for your business. You can use this to your advantage and ensure that you get the very best deal available – researching your options will also save some money too.
Taking some time to search for a reliable and professional plumbing firm that offers the required services at a competitive price will make your money go much farther. The most expensive or least expensive quotes aren’t always the best, but that should not be the only criteria to selecting a plumber. Here are a few tips to consider when looking for a plumber to work on your most valuable investment:
- Rates of the plumber: To be fair, any service provider needs to make a profit on their services, and a plumbing expert is no different. Realistically though, it should also be kept in mind that that there are many plumbers in Lynnwood, so the rates the plumber charges needs to take this into account. Do not settle for an outlandishly high quote. Do not be drawn into a suspiciously low quote too as many flyby night outfits try and trap homeowners into committing to a cheap quote only for the homeowner to find out too late that they are dealing with amateurs.
- Fully stocked up: If a plumbing emergency occurs at your property, you obviously need a company that can take care of it immediately. A plumber with a great quote that needs to special order certain parts or stock before being able to fix the problem is about as much help as a hand break in a canoe.
- Overtime labor: If the plumbing emergency occurs over a weekend, after hours or on a public holiday then you need to prepare paying for overtime labor. However this is not a license to rip off homeowners. Overtime is one thing, but again there are many plumbers waiting for your call that also offer competitive out of hour emergency service rates.
